Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar one of the five such institutes in the country of NCERT, New Delhi has been providing academic and technical support to the states of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Island for improvement of school education through pre-service and in-service programmes. However, with the establishment of North-East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), Shillong in 2015, in-service programmes as well as pre-service B.Ed. programme for North- Eastern states have been shifted to NERIE.
This Institute stands on Sachivalaya marg, Bhubaneswar about 5 km away from the city Railway Station and 7 km away from Biju Pattnaik International Airport. Known as "Temple City" of India for its rich heritage of temples like the Lingaraj, Mukteswar, Rajarani, Kedar Gouri and Baital, etc. Bhubaneswar is famous for their art, sculpture, architecture and sanctity as well. It also prides over the renowned and ancient monuments like Khandagiri, Udaygiri and Dhauli, to name a few. Declared as the 1st Smart City by the Government of India in 2016, Bhubaneswar has a glorious past where the historic Kalinga war was fought in 261 BC along the banks of the river Daya, which led to a miraculous transformation of Emperor Ashoka from Chandashoka to Dharmashoka in the path of peace and non-violence. Only 60 km away each from Puri( with its attractive sea beaches and Jagannath Temple) and Konark (with its pristine casuarinas forest and Sun Temple), Bhubaneswar stands as the third of the trio of the "Golden Triangle", so termed in modern parlance and also the destination of the tourists. Today, this city also known for its boom in academics, software parks, health services, tourism, trade and commerce, is a veritable meeting point of history and modernity.
Located in a 98.62 acre serene and sylvan surrounding, this Wi-Fi campus houses the establishments of the Institutes comprising the Academic and Administrative blocks, Library, Computer Application Center, Auditorium, Canteen, Hostels (03 for women, 01 for men and 01 for in-service participants), D.M. School for its innovative practices, Residential Quarters, Guest House, Dispensary, Post Office, State Bank of India along with play grounds. RIE is a co-educational residential institute having students from diverse languages and cultures of its hinterland representing a miniature India. Dr. J. N. Koul was its first Principal, and the present Principal Prof. P.C. Agarwal is 19th in the incumbency list.
The Institute offers the following courses for prospective teachers from the states and UT under its jurisdiction:
This Institute, affiliated to Utkal University, Bhubaneswar ( NAAC Accredited A+ Grade) runs courses approved by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE). The students in 4-year integrated courses , 2-year B.Ed & M.Ed course are admitted through the All India Common Entrance Examination (CEE) conducted by NCERT. On the other hand in M. Phil Courses, students are selected by the Entrance Examination conducted by the Institute. The students of this institute belonging to B.A. B.Ed., B.Sc. B.Ed., B.Ed. & M.Ed. undergo internship as per the NCTE guidelines in different schools of Eastern India. Multi- cultural exposure in rural, tribal and urban schools and field work with the community in a rural set up are some of the important field based activities of the programmes. The Institute has been recognized as a nodal Institute for Ph. D. Program in Education over the years. Besides Education, the institute is also recognized for Ph. D. programmes in all other subjects by the Utkal University as well.
The Institute has its own code of conduct to guide the students. Under this code students are restricted from using mobile phones or other electronic media during academic hours and inside the library. The timing of entering into college building and leaving is strictly followed as per the time schedule. Students are motivated to participate in various activities of the Institute- from sports and games to various curricular and other – curricular events. All the boarders are to abide by the hostel rules and regulations. If any deviation is found on their part, the disciplinary committee is to decide the type of punishment including expulsion from the Institute. The Institute is not responsible for any kind of unforeseen eventualities. For going home or availing leave, students need to take permission from the competent authority of the Institute.
The Institute offers in- service training in teacher- education at different levels ( from Preschool to Higher Secondary) of school education. The areas covered are Science and Mathematics, Social Science, Language, Education, Educational Technology, Environmental Education, Guidance and Counseling & Special Education. Other need based short term courses and projects are undertaken after discussion with the state Govt. Authorities as per their requirements.
The residential character of this co-educational Institute facilitates the development of curricular and other curricular activities that contribute to the complete development of students’ personality. It offers plenty of opportunities to the students to showcase their potential through participatory pogrammes such as Talent Search, Spring Festival, Literary Competitions, Teaching Aids Exhibition, NSS, RIE Students Meet and Games & Sports.

This Institute established in 1964, is the Laboratory School of the Institute for undertaking action research , experiments and innovations in school education. It is a co-educational school with classes from Pre- Primary to Higher Secondary. Designed as a pace-setting institution, it is affiliated to CBSE. This school has produced generations of students who have achieved excellence in various fields.
Research :
RIE, Bhubaneswar being an apex body at the regional level undertakes research programmes related to different aspects of school education. The priority areas of Research include curricular studies, national concerns, pedagogic practices and learning processes, systematic concerns such as Teacher preparation, examination reform, ICT integration in education and other areas identified by NCERT from time to time.
The institute undertakes various development activities in school education like developing curricular and resource materials for various stages related to domains of Educational Technology, Population Education, Inclusive Education, Environmental Education for sustainable development etc.
The institute works in collaboration with many agencies and institutes in the Region for providing guidance to various categories of personnel such as teachers, teacher educators, educational administrators, question paper setters, textbook writers through regional level workshops, Seminars and Conferences as part of its extension activities covering all the States and UT under its jurisdiction. Eminent scholars are invited on several occasions to deliver talks on various issues and concerns of education under the extension lecture series.
The institute organizes exchange programmes with University Departments and Teacher Education Institutes both in India and overseas for exchange of ideas, Experiences, Practices with Teachers, Teacher Educators and Specialists.
The old students of this institute, a testament to the efficacy of our mission and goal, can be showcased as model teachers , administrators and organizers in school education have also excelled in other Fields(Such as Higher Education, Research, Civil Administration, Banking etc.) as well. At present, there is an active Alumni Association functioning from the Institute Campus.
The Institute library houses more than 82,000 books of various Indian and foreign authors including textbooks and references. It subscribes to more than 150 kinds of journals and magazines both national and international and more than 15 newspapers in different languages. Online access to over 97,000 e-books and 6000 e-journals is available through NLIST consortium. Articles & synopsis of various research and thesis work are also available in the library. The students and staff members are issued library cards using which they can borrow specific numbers of books for specific duration. The computerized library has Open Access Public Cataloguing (OPAC) system and is functioning under the guidance of an experienced librarian.
There is provision for scholarship in the different courses of the Institute. All the students belonging to SC&ST communities are entitled for the scholarship on various courses. Fifty percent of the students other than SC ST Categories enrolled in different courses are eligible for scholarship on the basis of their marks and performance in the University examination.
Each year, a number of reputed schools from across the country visit the Institute and conduct on-campus tests/interviews to select teachers from among the eligible students of the institute. The schools offer good salary package and opportunities for vertical growth.
NCERT books Sales counter is operating in the campus since February 2013.
