The school was conceived and set up as pace setting institution and hence the name Demonstration Multipurpose School. The institution strives to make education more relevant and qualitative, and accessible to the poorest of the poor. Hence it bears the popular epithet “The Poor man’s Public School” or “Amm Admi ka School”.
Another special features of the school is that it facilitate analysis, review and research in major problems in the teaching-learning process and enables the prospective teachers to observe, learn and participate in teaching during the internship programmes. It also serves as a centre for the study of curriculum and National Policy of Education designed by NCERT from time to time.
Another distinctive feature of the school is its system of admission. It follows the pattern of random selection for admission of students into classes starting from Class-I to VIII since 1999 which is now introduced all over INDIA as per RTE. In order to enable meritorious students from Oriya Medium Schools to get distinctive English medium education, it also allows another admission at Class-VI level. The particular section remains Oriya Medium upto Class-VII and then merges with main stream, English Medium Class-VIII.
At the secondary level, besides offering instructions in the traditional core subject like English, Oriya, Sanskrit, Bengali, Science, Social Science, General Studies and Mathematics, it also imparts education in Computers, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Radio Servicing/ Electronics, Wood Work and Physical Education at the +2 level, in addition to the usual subject of Humanities, Commerce and Science Streams. As a special feature the school has Counsellor for guidance and counseling. The school Library holds a good number of reference books, journals, dailies, periodicals and other titles on its shelves.
